Adapt Others’ Measures With Caution

What if you wish to adapt others’ measures for your own purpose? For example, you may have found a wonderful scale for assessing assertiveness and wish to alter it for use with individuals diagnosed with multiple personality disorder by asking the person to fill it out with reference to each personality. This, of course, means altering the instructions and focus of the instrument.

Will its original psychometric properties still be relevant? You cannot be sure. Logically, the less you change an instrument, the more you should be able to assume that its properties would stay the same. For example, administering only certain Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory—2 (MMPI–2) subscales could reasonably be expected to yield subscale scores that would be the same as subscale scores derived from the same items embedded in the full MMPI–2. However, you cannot be sure unless you gather some data to assess whether this is so. One way to do this would be to conduct a pilot study. Scores on the shortened versus full MMPI–2 could be correlated (as when assessing alternate-form reliability). And, as indicated previously, additional measures that would help you assess the validity of the altered instrument could be built directly into your research project itself.
